/11/86 Camping at Thorong Phedi. As we approached the last climb up to the camp a German lady passed us going the other way. She said “Go slowly, there is a man dying up there.” A woman who was a doctor said that the man had to be moved down or he would die. Someone dismantled our loo tent to use it as a stretcher but, apparently, the man weighed 120kg. Lots of arguing over who should assist the man but, eventually, it was too late. He had died.
/11/86 Crossed the Thorong La pass to Muktinath
/11/86 Morning spent in Muktinath. Walked through Kagbeni – last of the fortified towns. Kali Gandaki flood plain – looking for ammonites. Camped by Kagbeni Lodge but went inside to eat.
/11/86 Walking down Kali Gandaki. Lunch at Jomsom – a sprawling town. Alison visited the hospital – 1 delivery bed, 15 beds male/ female, 4 in-patients. Little operating theatre, dressing room with oceans of gentian violet. Had a chat with the doctor. He saw 21 out-patients yesterday. Walked on to Marpha. First views of dhaulagiri and Nilgiri. Visited the Gompa which is 200 years old and the paintings were 6 years old, 260 prayer books. Stayed in a lodge on the south side of Gompa which cost 15 rupees and an extra 5 rupees for a freezing cold (solar heated) shower.
/11/86 Rain overnight. On through Tukuche and Khotang. Saw Evergreen Oak. Camped on the roof of Ghasa and Dhaulagiri guest house. Apparently there was afight at night but we slept through it.
/11/86 Saw Annapurna I. Cicadas heard once more. Back to Banana trees and rice terraces. Bullocks being used to thresh by walking around a pole. Camped at back of a lodge at Tatopani – view of Nigiri South. Buckwheat being cut.
/11/86 Climbed out of Tatopani. Oliander (pink) flowers, mountain cherry trees. Stopped for lemu drink and coconut biscuits (Khara) in a shady store. Climbed all afternoon to Ghorapani. Sat in Lodge around a central fire with a chimney made of biscuit tins. A cold night.

Dhaulagiri, Tukuche Peak, Nilgiri, Tilicho Peak, Fang, Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Machapuchare then back to camp for breakfast. Walked downhill all day through “spooky” rhododendron and Daphne. Down Ulleri steps – 3767 or so. We saw our orange groundsheet (for lunch) laid out below us for 45 minutes before we arrived at it. Continued downhill to Birethanti to camp over a bridge and down the river.
/11/17 Beautiful view of Machapuchare. Walked up hil for two hours. Children begging and throwing stones if we don’t “cough up”. View of Pokhara Lake. Camped at Sarangkot.
